Voice & Video Calling

Voice and video calls. Supervised.

Stay in touch with your child — and stay in control of who else can reach them. Guardians and their children can always call each other. Who else can call is entirely up to you.

Free for guardians and their children

One tap to call home.

In the app, children have a dedicated screen listing all their guardians — with a single tap to start an audio or video call to any of them. No phone number to remember, no dialling, no searching through contacts. Just tap a name and call.

This works over Wi-Fi, so no SIM card or active mobile plan is needed. A tablet, an old phone, or any iOS or Android device can reach you — wherever you are.

Multiple people can be set as guardians — co-parents, grandparents, or anyone you want your child to be able to reach. Each one appears in your child’s list, ready to call at any time.

Stay connected — always.

Every child and their guardians can call each other at any time. A guardian can call their child on a tablet, and a child can call a parent back when they’re ready. This connection is always on — it isn’t affected by your message protection settings or the protection level you have set.

Calls look and feel like real phone calls. Incoming calls come through to the lock screen — your child can answer or decline without even unlocking their device.

You decide who else can call your child.

By default, your child can only call — and be called by — their guardians. No one else can initiate or receive a call with your child unless you explicitly allow it.

Audio and video calling are controlled independently, so your settings can be as precise as you need. You might allow a trusted family friend to make audio calls while keeping video calls switched off — or enable both for grandparents on your child’s contact list. These settings are on your child’s profile and can be changed at any time.

If someone tries to call your child and the call isn’t allowed, the guardians of the child whose Call Protection setting stopped it are notified — for example, “Alex tried to call Sam” — with a shortcut to the settings so you can allow it if you’d like. To avoid flooding you, repeat attempts are grouped: you’ll be alerted at most once every 30 minutes for the same person and call type.

Per-conversation calling permissions. ✨

⭐ Premium feature

With Premium protection, you can override calling permissions for individual conversations. Set any contact’s chat to Default (follows your profile setting), Allowed, or Not Allowed — for audio and video independently. This lets you give specific conversations different calling rules without changing anything globally for your child.

Per-conversation calling permissions are found in the channel info screen in your guardian dashboard — the same screen where you can set per-conversation message protection settings for that chat.

Calls are logged, not recorded.

Every call creates an entry in the conversation’s chat timeline — showing whether it was answered, missed, or declined, and how long it lasted if it connected. These entries are visible to guardians who view that chat with a Premium subscription.

No audio or video is ever recorded. ChatMinder does not capture, store, or review the content of any call — call logging is metadata only (status, duration, timestamp), in keeping with our privacy-first approach.

Calls also appear in your weekly activity report: the number of voice and video calls, the minutes spent on them, and how many different people your child spoke to.

A real call experience — iOS and Android.

Calling integrates with the native call system on each platform. On iOS, incoming calls come through CallKit — the same interface used for standard phone calls and FaceTime — so your child sees a proper incoming call screen even if the ChatMinder app is fully closed. On Android, the standard call screen is used.

Both audio and video calls are supported. During a video call the speaker is on by default. Either participant can mute, switch to earpiece, or end the call at any time.

Calling is available on iOS and Android. It is not available in the web browser version of ChatMinder.
