What does “protected user” mean?

In ChatMinder, your child is a protected user — a type of account that sits under your guardianship. You’re the guardian; they’re the protected user.

Protected users can chat, send messages, and be part of group conversations — just like any messaging app. The difference is that you, the guardian, control their settings: who they can talk to, whether messages need your approval, and how much independence they have.

You can create a protected profile for each of your children. Each one gets their own independent messaging life, with their own contacts and chats — fully separate from each other and from you.

All you need to get started

Creating a protected profile requires very little information:

  • A first name — just a first name or nickname to identify their profile
  • Their device — any iOS device, Android device, or a web browser

No email address, phone number, or password required for your child.

Creating a protected profile — step by step

Step 1 — Open the supervision section

From the ChatMinder app or web portal, open your supervision dashboard, go to Protected Users and tap “Add protected user”. This starts the profile creation flow — it only takes a minute or two.

Step 2 — Choose their name

Enter your child’s name. This is how they’ll appear in the app to their contacts.

Only the first letter of their name will be visible anywhere until they have been added as a contact by those people who know them.

Step 3 — Set their Contacts Protection level

Choose how much independence your child has. There are three options: Guardian Managed (you control everything), Approval Required (they initiate, you approve), or No Approval Required (they manage their own circle).

Don’t worry about getting this perfect — you can change it any time.

Step 4 — Set their Message Protection level

Select the Approval Required option if you want to review all messages before they are delivered.

Share their profile (optional)

Once created, you’ll be prompted to share the new profile with your existing contacts — letting trusted family members and friends find and add your child straight away. You can also do this at any time from your child’s profile in the supervision dashboard.
